Moosehead Manufacturing — its Monson mills, equipment and designs — was purchased in September 2007 by state Rep. Josh Tardy, R-Newport and House Minority Leader; Dana Connors, the head of the Maine Chamber of Commerce; and Ed Skovron Jr., an investor from Rhode Island. Each became primary investors in the retooled Moosehead Furniture.
The three formed the Tardy-Connors Group LLC and said at the time that by downsizing to a single plant — leaving the emptied Dover-Foxcroft plant in the hands of former owner John Wentworth — and relocating operations to an existing facility in Monson, the company would be better positioned to compete.
Wentworth had announced the closure of Moosehead Manufacturing and the loss of 126 jobs in February 2007. But by the end of that year, the Tardy-Connors Group LLC purchased the business. Wentworth pegged the sale of the Monson plant, brand and equipment at approximately $2.2 million. Tardy would not confirm sale costs.
Tardy-Connors Group LLC hired Wentworth to help manage the Monson facility. Wentworth said Tuesday the company’s upcoming foreclosure auction may help resolve debts and allow new ownership to flourish.
“I’m hoping for someone who will come in and take a chance on a plant that’s ready to make wood products,” he said.
Liquidation prices may help, he said. The mills, saws and facility are unique, he said. “Once they’re gone, they’re gone.”
